This test is a little long so make sure you have energy for 15 mins before starting it:

Who can out-geek me, as the resident and professional code monkey, war game collector and general geek I doubt most of you will out-do my 29.889% "Total Geek" but you may try:

http://www.innergeek.us/geek-test.html

Answer honestly now, I did.

4.61255%. It also described me as a poser, which I thought was a bit harsh  Smiley

Maybe I should buy an anorak?

I'm afraid you're a mere amateur...

My sister is 40 on Sunday (same day as I turn 43) and it's her last day at work today, so her geek colleague put up a banner with pi to 40 decimal places.
So I sent her a text file I have with pi to 9 million places. That I just happened to have lying around.

Extra geek points for:
at that moment I was running Linux in a virtual box on Win7. Of course I triple boot Win7 with Linux & XP, too, so I can run virtual Windows on Linux. For no good reason other than I can.
While wearing a t-shirt from www.lastexittonowhere.com.
Complete Buffy and Star Trek: TNG DVD boxsets.
Periodic table desktop widget.
Currently searching eBay for a power supply for a 21 year old laptop (Compaq LTE 5400, should anyone have an 18VDC/2.6A supply lying around) that I just want to play around with. And possibly blow up.
While running GIMPS and BOINC. On 2 machines.
Using old hard drives as a paperweights, including a 500Gb one; and several old motherboards lying around as "ornaments".
When I tidied up behind my computer desk recently I found 9 USB leads, 3 power leads, 2 adsl filters, a broadband modem and several misc serial leads that I'd forgotten I had.
Drawer full of old mobile phones, leads, network cards, graphics cards (ah, ye olde Matrox Millenium!), installation disks (CD & floppy).
Subscription to BBC Focus Magazine.

Slinks away quietly, not sure whether to be proud or embarrassed  shocked
There's an Edgar Allan Poe figurine on my desk in front of me (with raven). Next to a heatsink and some thermal paste. And 4 USB memory sticks. And 2 swiss army knives.

Hey, Mike, I've got 5 USB memory sticks.  Does that improve my score?

But on the other hand, I've only got one swiss army knife and the bit that gets stones out of horse's hooves is missing. So on balance, I guess that leaves me where I am  Huh?

I got 10.70111% - Geekish Tendencies

I'm not that geeky. I have been involved in fandom a little though and I like to read and study and find documentaries and museums interesting! So there is a little bit of geek in me...

Roger, I had to leave the games unanswered because I hate games... books take to long to read so I stick to the comics... and can't watch the tv/films because the tv is always in P.C mode.... honest!!...  rolleyes wink

Dear Geeks

Can you answer a few questions for this non-geek?

eg    the difference between speed and velocity ?

the names of 3 temperature scales
and the H2O freezing/boiling points of each ?

        Clarke's Third Law ?

Enjoyed the test, even though I failed dismally. I suspect my brother would score 'dysfunctional'
Being 42 he thinks he IS the answer to life the universe and eveything.

Hi Oldie,

If, like me, you’ve spent many of the last twenty-four hours fretting over the fact that you failed the test, feeling inadequate, worrying that you’ll become an outcast, considered a buffoon, fret no more.

I awoke this morning wondering just what a geek is, so I investigated and this is what I found –

Geek definition -  A person regarded as foolish, inept, clumsy or socially inept. (There was some nonsense about scientific or technical genius, but that can be ignored.)

How to recognise a geek – wears an anorak, ill-fitting trouser, wire spectacles, worn brown suede shoes and has a silly hair cut. Is prone to acne and carries his possessions in an orange, plastic Sainsbury’s bag. Has dirty finger nails and yellowing teeth.

Is that what you want to be? No? Then forget those silly questions you asked and take heart in the fact that in failing the test, we actually WON!

1) Velocity is a vector quantity, i.e. it has a magnitude AND a direction whereas speed only has magnitude (which is why you're accelerating when going around a bend at a constant speed, because the magnitude of your velocity remains the same, but the direction changes, and change in velocity = acceleration)

2) Celsius, fahrenheit and kelvin (which starts from absolute zero [-273 C or -459 F])

3) the real geek answer to that question would be to ask, "at what pressure?". Could be stated as 0C, 273.15K and 32F. Also, it's possible to cool pure water to -42C (231K) before it freezes.

Heck. I'd definitely have one if I had the money! I've been eyeing 4GHz 6-core AMD Phenom machines on Overclockers.co.uk but the Job Centre don't seem to agree that they should give me an IB boost to pay for one.

I'd have more USB sticks if I were less good at losing them. Thankfully I'm a lot better at not losing them now that I have 8 and 16Gb ones, not just 256 & 512Mb.

Ahhh, but geeks are becoming cool, Roger!

A lot of the popular characters on TV today are geeks!

Lol and check out this definition on Urban Dictionary (always an awesome place to find definitions on):

Geeks: The people you pick on in high school and wind up working for as an adult.

Curse you, Mike - there's me doing my best to save Oldie from herself then you step in putting silly, high-faluting ideas into her head that'll lead her astray again. Will you please just leave it to me in future? Thank you!

No they're not, Luc, at least not anywhere other than in Geekland. I've already demonstrated that geeks only exist to be despised and persecuted so stop trying to defend them!

And the fact that they're now popular on TV tells me all I need to know - so are reality shows, shopping channels, Esstenders and.......well I won't go on but, hopefully, my point is made.

And I don't work for the one I picked on in high school so that's clearly a nonsensical definition. I suggest you use the OED in future.

I repeat - non-geeks unite!!!!  Smiley

Extra geek personal facts: I'll take ANY excuse to make up a spreadsheet. Started graded exercise program? Spreadsheet! Selling some CDs? Spreadsheet! Wondered what a pie chart of the squares, cubes, fourth and fifth powers of the first 500 integers would look like? Spreadsheet!
Ah, anyone else miss the "flight simulator" easter egg in Excel 97?

Mike,

Thank you so much for the answers. clap
I only asked because I'm fairly sure I USED to know those facts! sign0085

Ignore my friend Roger, he's just throwing his toys out of the pram!
(at least his toys don't require any cables or power packs or software!)

Roger, play nice with the other boys and girls...... 86

Oh, okay, Oldie, you’ve got me and forced me into an admission. It was petulance - brought about by having the lowest Geek score of anyone - that devised my cunning plan to turn the tables – a cunning plan that clearly wasn’t as cunning as I thought  Huh?

And if there's anyone left who'll play with me, I'll try my very best to play nicely  Smiley

Hey, thanks, Carol, that would have been a much better and more cunning plan than the one I came up with. Too late now though - they've sussed me and I'm confined to the naughty chair  Huh?
