Sufferer and carer!

« on: June 16, 2010, 02:52:43 PM »

 s_hi everyone,

We are going through the process of trying to get some Home Tuition put in place for our 12 year od with ME.  This is proving to be a longer process than we'd hope - so thought I'd put some links on here as we go for others who may be going through the process in the near future.

This link gives you lots of info on your rights for flexible education for a sick child.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/parents/schoolslearninganddevelopment/yourchildswelfareatschool/dg_10037983

On this link there is another at the botton of page that will link you to the full govt doc which you can down load.

Will post others as I get them.
Feel free to PM me if anyone wants more info.

Well after a formal letter of complaint to the LEA supported by our MP we have finally been given out of school provision for our son from Sept!! Smiley

Ha can either acesss the On -line learning programme or we can have a home tutor.
We managed to trial both before the end of term and my son has decided he would prefer home tuition .

If anyone has any difficulty in getting educational support for a child with ME/CFS please feel free to PM me and I can give you lots of info we used to help.

Brilliant news Bossy  clap

Kim's home tutors were great....not just on an education level. She got so much out of their visits - moral support and encouragement from someone other than her dad and I!  Its was great for me too!

Best of luck for September  thumbsup

Hi Bossy,

You have every sympathy from me having to go through all this.  My mother had the exact same difficulties and was threatened with prison if my attendance wasn't significantly improved and that's when home tuition was recommended.  However, we had to fight with blood, sweat and tears to get anything properly evaluated and understood.  We had a lot of resistance and when we eventually got it I was so stressed I was even too sick to properly study with them for weeks !

I'm so pleased you've managed to sort this out now though.  I'm sure it's a huge relief for the whole family and fingers crossed he/she (sorry I don't know ! undecided) can rest up before September in preparation for the tuition !

Thanks for your replies.   Yes its been a huge struggle -and mainy due to the lack of knowledge from the school and Educational Welfare staff.
They have very little knowledge of the processes in place for children with long term medical conditions. It seems stratergies are in place once you get through to the right dept at the LEA but it is getting there that has been the problem!!

Looking forward to Sept and keeping fingers crossed that with good support from the new school and home tuition support our son can get the best education he can within his limitations.

Best wishes to you all x x x x
