I can't stand it anymore. Since November 2005, I've had a severe sore throat. Each time I answer the phone, I have to explain that it's some kind of laryngitis that doesn't heal. Could you help me? My doctor did prescribe Benzydamine HCL to numb my throat and it does not work. Lately, it has made my throat burn more. Please HEEEELLLLP !    sign0085

I don't know if I have the same kind of sore throat. . .it's constant, but not acute.  I find that eating and drinking cooled food and drink helps (hot anything tends to make it worse).  I also keep my throat lubricated by sucking on peppermints and throat sweets.

I know that clove oil is a natural way to numb mouth sores. . .I wonder if you could concoct a spray for your throat out of saline spray and clove oil?  I don't know if it would work or if you could even do it, but it might be worth a try.  Also, a neti pot might be helpful.  Keeping your sinus passages moist helps to keep your throat moist and not so sore.  If you don't want to buy a neti pot and the sachets for it, I find that a little sea salt in warm water works well. . .just put it in a baster or something and drip it up your nose, letting it roll into your throat.  It's weird at first, but then you will get used to it.  Just don't use too much salt!  That will burn.  :(

I'm sorry that you have to go through this. . .I hope you find some sort of relief soon.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have also heard that ginseng could be good.
Have your heard of it?

I've heard about ginseng for your general health, so I suppose it couldn't hurt your throat any.  I hope that things get better soon.  Smiley

The last couple of days, my throat has been burning more than usual. Today, I have a difficult time swallowing. My husband is getting my old prescription back - it's not working but it's better than nothing at all.
Fortunately, I am seeing my doctor Monday.

Someone also mentioned to quit dairy products. She also had a chronic sore throat and was about to get her tonsils removed. She found out it was a sensitivity issue. I will go back to my dairy-free diet and see how it turns out.

You have my total sympathy with this!  I suffer dreadfully with throat problems with my ME.  Your have prob already done this - but has you doc taken a throat swab from you - just to check you are not getting a recurring infection- like Strep???  Its painless and well worth having done.

I had one last year after having 12 courses of antibiotics for what doc thought was Tonsillitus - but turns out it was Strep throat and a different antibiotics seems to work better - having said that I still keep getting it!!

I also get a sore throat every time I over do things - warm salt water works best I find and drinking loads - water that is not wine!!!  ( I wish!!) Smiley

Thank you Bossy. I saw my GP on Monday and he gave me the okay for the ginseng. I started it yesterday (for 15 days). We'll see.

A couple of years ago, I got many of those throat swabs you are mentioning. Each time, nothing. The pain is not exactly like a strep throat. It feels more like I have spent the evening at the ball game and screamed really loud to cheer for my team. Or if you are allergic to smoke like me, it's like spending a night in a bar with a crowd of smokers around you. The next morning, I always end up with an acute case of laryngitis.

This time around my doc has decided to try a magic mouthwash - tetracycline and hydrocortisone in a benadryl solution. The problem is that I react strongly to benadryl (palpitations, fever). However, I think I will give it a try since I will not swallow this solution and it will numb my throat. I hope something will work... and fast!

Like you, my throat is hurting more when I am exhausted. Right now, I am going through a relapse (or a very severe flare). It always does that after I go out of the house for an hour.

Thank you again for taking the time. I appreciate it.

Hi,
I suffered chronic tonsillitis for months and months... it's actually what kicked my illness off, so I have tried everything you can imagine! I ended up having my tonsils out 3rd July but the op has knocked me for six and more lymph tissue is now growing where they were already!
The best things I found are -

Soluble aspirin gargle
Salt water gargle
Manuka honey and lemon drinks (I use one teaspoon honey, squeeze lemon to cup hot water
Zinc & Vit C supplements, and I was told to use Ecinachea too
Also, ice packs on the outside of your throat help.

I tried various herbal and homeopathic remedies, but the manuka was the best thing for me.
Hope this maybe helps a bit x
