I like folk music too mn. Also Leonard Cohen .. saw him sing in Brighton around about 1973 .. he was amazingly modest and did around 12 curtain calls.

I have an annoying habit (bit like Roger's really) of just listening to the same piece of music (CD as I am so old fashioned) over and over again. Currently I like Beirut's - The Flying Club Corps which is rather quirky.

Just remember, young Teresa, nobody likes a smart-arse, and smarty didn't get an invite to the party  wiggle finger

But, and it's killing me to say it, you are quite clever - there. I've said it grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Anyway, this is a better one - the homecoming

SWEET!

And in reply to your earlier post, I LOVE Guided By Voices! I think I have an old demo of Kim singing with them). My problem is that I was born in '90 so missed getting to see a lot of these bands play, dammit! Smiley

Today has been all about Visqueen - http://www.myspace.com/visqueen They embody a lot of that old school early 90s post-grunge and it's female led, so naturally it's awesome Smiley

Cool. On my "things to do today" list is to watch the Guided By Voiced farewell gig DVD, all 60+ songs of it (just looked on Wikipedia & it mentions that the GBV song database contains 728 songs written by Robert Pollard, and  another 359 co-written = 1,087 songs. Crikey!)

Liked the Visqueen song I listened to on Myspace, will have to check 'em out in more depth soon!

Have done. Although it was only 55% full. Odd.

Anyway, on topic, as I'm here - currently listening to "The Gathering Wilderness" by epic, heathen, Irish metal band Primordial
"The Coffin Ships" (about the ships fleeing the Irish famine) is particularly moving -

Young hearts are born with grief
Will pay the penalty of truth
A season of stolen youth
Shall teach old hearts to break

It feels like I've been here before
Here where the animals lay down to die
So we stood alone on a distant store
Our broken spirits in rags and tatters

Nerve and muscle, heart and brains
Lost to Ireland, lost in vain
Pause and you can almost hear
The sounds echo down through the ages
The creak of the burial cart
Here in humiliation and sorrow
Not mixed with indignation
One is driven to exclaim
Oh god, that bread should be so dear
And human flesh so cheap

Young hearts are born with such grief
We have paid the penalty of truth
A season of our stolen youth
Shall teach our hearts to break

more slow and heavy, with a large glass of red wine: Scorn "Evanescence" - bass heavy, chocolatet dub from 2 (at the time of this album, now 1) ex-members of grindcore/death metal legends Napalm Death

Scorn - "Light Trap" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amiWtd3vbp0

Dude, that Scorn track is immense!

I've been on The Sisters Of Mercy today. Nice and goth, unlike what these emo kids call goth ;-)

Wow, someone liked it!  Smiley
Avoid their first album unless you like really heavy industrial metal, then they got more dub heavy for a couple of albums, then when down to one member more beats-y.

I love a lot of the precursors to goth - Sisters, Bauhaus, Banshees (hell, i even used to own a few Alien Sex Fiend records), but the kinda later goth-techno/EBM stuff I can stand, and this emo-goth nonsense, bleh!
Hell, I might have to go & stick some Bauhaus on now!

Now wrong with Joni! I'm intrigued by the name Beirut, so I'll have to check em out.

Today has been -
AM - Justified Ancients of Mu Mu/KLF
PM - Bauhaus

seeing the day out with some Nick Drake
damn, the boy still gives good melancholia

Aha ... even I have heard Nick Drake .. my husband has an extensive CD collection and he has some of his stuff.

Beirut is quite recent for me! I first heard this CD at my brother's house and he heard of them via his daughter who liked them - quite quirky sounding but very melodic.

As for dear Joni .. she was my favourite for years .. I always wanted to hit those notes like she did.

i love Joni Mitchell, one of my all time faves! when my kids where younger, on a rainy day we would put on Joni Mitchell and bake muffins. it always gave me the most incredible feeling of contentment, even now the kids still love her.

yesterday my hubby gave me a pressy of 3 new CDs. i was very excited as we cant really aford it - but it was lovely of him. i havent listened to music much at all since last year as i couldnt tolerate the noise and it made me sad. but now am feeling well enough to listen and be annoyed because i cant dance!

so, he got me; mumford and sons - excellent stomping folk type (i heard they where the best at glasto this year)
also Laura Marling - really beautiful and also folky - a lot like joni actually. also very chuffed as my16 yrear old daughter thinks shes cool and wants to borrow it.
lastly but by no means least - I am Kloot - recommended by Guy Garvey of elbow - its great, kind of like manchester indie crossed with Neil Diamond with beautiful and melancholic words.

been getting into Fela Kuti lately, took me long enough to check him out
kinda funky African jazz (I can hear a lot of Miles Davis or Sun Ra in his stuff), i have no idea if this kinda music has a name, but he had a record of sticking it to the corrupt government of Nigeria, so he's punk as f*** in my book

Now I love a lot of folk music, and I don't mind a bit of pop music now and then.

One for fans of Richard Thompson and Britney Spears - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAS4ltt7DzI   Smiley  clap

Mike, liked the britney spears cover, which made me think of this; the Arctic Monkes doing Girls Aloud's Love Machine.
